I arrived here at Beaumont’s St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in the late 1960s during a turbulent period in our nation’s history. But growing up here, I learned important values such as loving my neighbors and serving the least of those in my community. Besides my parents, I had school teachers, Boy Scout leaders, and Sunday School teachers demonstrating and instilling these values in me. And I have never forgotten the values taught to me at home, local schools, the First Baptist Church of Beaumont, and BSA Troop 191 in Pine Forest.
While I left the area after graduating, I returned to Southeast Texas to take care of my aging parents who taught me that honesty and decency should always be a priority. They raised me to look after my neighbors and help the less fortunate in our community while leading by example. Growing up, I watched them volunteer in Southeast Texas organizations and help the community during extraordinary disasters like Hurricanes Rita, Ike, and Harvey. They walked the walk, which inspired me to follow in their footsteps in caring for my community.
And that’s exactly why I’m running for Congress.
Together we can elect a new Congress that helps ALL Americans prosper… not just the wealthy. We’ll make the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes. We’ll also pay our bills today and not burden our grandchildren with our country’s debt.
We must also act now to protect the health care of our neighbors before it is too late. Rural communities in Southeast Texas stand to lose the most with the latest cuts to Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (“CHIPs”). With these cuts, rural hospitals will close and our fellow Texans will have no place to go for emergency medical care.
And finally, we must revive honesty and decency in our Nation’s Capital. We must start talking with one another – and stop the shouting and name-calling.
This isn’t going to be your average campaign. We’re at the forefront of a movement backed by folks who want a new generation of leadership in DC. I won’t be bought or intimidated by people who want their self-interests taken care of at the expense of our fellow Texans. Instead, I plan to rely on the citizens of Southeast Texas like you.
Southeast Texas taught me to love my neighbors, serve others, and lead with honesty and decency. I watched people live those values every day, and I want to bring them to
Washington.
That’s why I’m running for Congress.
